Milano Marittima: ideas for a glamorous weekend on the Romagna Riviera

Not only sand and sea. Milano Marittima is a destination that offers entertainment, art, culture and worldliness.

Milano Marittima is not just the beach. But it does not take much to understand this. Its vocation for elegance was born at the beginning of the 20th century, when a small holiday resort nestled between the sea and the pine forest was founded, just a stone's throw from Cervia and its Magazzini del Sale (Salt Warehouses), for the wealthy Milanese bourgeoisie, a garden city. In the midst of tree-lined avenues and manicured gardens, hotels and villas, restaurants and holiday camps were built from 1927 onwards. A history of elite tourism that continues today, making Milano Marittima one of the most popular resorts on the Riviera Romagnola, thanks to the glamorous places and occasions the town offers.

A plunge into art
The Mare e Pineta Hotel (now MarePineta Resort) was inaugurated between 1926 and 1927 as the first large, prestigious hotel in Milano Marittima: large green spaces, early 20th-century architecture for the historic part of the hotel, contemporary design in the interior, sports club and private beach. Since 1995, the Salaroli family has been taking care of it and projecting its former glory into the present. With the intervention of Studio Lissoni Associati adding a new contemporary wing, conn suites, the restaurant and connecting spaces; the public areas are transformed into an art gallery with paintings and photographs; the garden, enlarged, becomes the Sculpture Park. And it is here that, until 1 October, one can admire the exhibition "La pineta e il mare - Un viaggio verso l'Infinito" (The Pine Forest and the Sea - A journey towards Infinity) by the Korean artist Park Eun Sun, organised in collaboration with the Contini Art Gallery and under the patronage of the Municipality of Cervia. 14 works, installed in the Sculpture Park, make up the open-air exhibition that aims to encourage the revival and enjoyment of culture, bringing contemporary art into everyday life.

"The artist Park Eun Sun's experimentation begins with the material he works on almost scientifically, enhancing it and, at the same time, deconstructing it. The fundamental characteristic of his contemporary gesture is precisely that of imposing a fracture. Marbles and granites are sculpted, polished and finally split and then reassembled. These cracks are for the artist a metaphor for life, the scars of the suffering inherent in existence but at the same time a symbol of reconstruction and rebirth. Park Eun Sun's sculptures create an artistic journey of strong visual impact". say Stefano and Riccarda Contini.
