Mitoraj: Mito e Musica, Pietrasanta
L'ultima esposizione ideata dal Maestro Igor Mitoraj
The city of Pietrasanta is dedicating an exhibition to Igor Mitoraj, a well-known sculptor who recently passed away and has been an honorary citizen since 2001. Produced in collaboration with the Contini Art Gallery in Venice, the exhibition runs from April 18 to August 30, 2015, at various venues, including the Piazza del Duomo, the Sant'Agostino complex and Piazza Matteotti.
The cathedral square hosts monumental works in bronze and, for the first time, two huge works in clay, original matrices for later castings. The bronze works interact independently with the architecture of the square, while the clay works are set in an "enchanted garden." The clay undergoes slow degradation under the action of Time, transforming the exhibition into an "event in the making," reflecting on the interaction between Time and Matter.
The exhibition also features a rich program of weekly musical events, run by the Puccini Festival Foundation, with which Mitoraj had collaborated. The events take place in the Church of St. Augustine, with works by the Maestro and images by Giovanni Ricci-Novara as set design. The Sala del Capitolo displays sketches of Mitoraj's sets and costumes for the Puccini Festival. The Sala dei Putti presents bronze sketches and images of monumental installations. Piazza Matteotti, site of the Town Hall, hosts a bronze Daedalus that dialogues with the frescoes painted by Mitoraj in the Council Chamber. The Fondazione La Versiliana is participating in the organization.
